THE BACKROOM BOYS

THE UPCOMING 17TH WORLD BRIDGE SERIES IN KATOWICE, POLAND, WILL BRING A BRIEF PAUSE TO A SERIES OF MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.

Players travel from around the world to compete, always arriving to find ideal playing conditions, with all the paraphernalia that is required to ensure the smooth running of a tournament in place. I wonder if they have given any thought as to how this miracle comes about.

The equipment will have been sent to the venue well in advance, and might involve transportation over land, sea and air.

Just as the players require customs clearance, so does the equipment and the possibility of unforeseen delays must be considered.

Once on site, everything needs to be put in place and all the technical equipment needs to be checked, including tablets, bridgemates, computers, lights, cameras and so on.

Staff need to be on site well before the players arrive, and a dedicated team must set up the tables, chairs, bidding boxes, etc. At the end of the event, everything must be dismantled, and returned to base, ready for the next event.

At the 2019 World Youth Championships in Opatija, the then WBF President Gianarrigo Rona asked the Internet Broadcasting Manager Traian Chira if he could design something that would enable all 96 tables at a World Bridge Team Championship to be on camera.

Two years later, history was made in Salsomaggiore Terme when the cameras were used for the first time. It proved to be an invaluable aid to the directing staff, who repeatedly consulted the videos, which demonstrated their worth by resolving numerous cases where the facts were disputed. The cameras can be used in cases where the possibility of unfair play is being investigated. They were consulted more than 100 times and they are now sine qua non for every major event, regardless of the number of tables.
