How to defend against pre-emptive bids.
North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?
This month we will be looking at:
How to defend against pre-emptive bids.
Problem 1

| W | N | E | S |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4♠ | Dble | Pass | 5♥ |
The facts
The famous swing in the wrong direction. 5 Hearts and 4 Spades both are down two. Who is to blame?
Arguments
North: “The Double of a 4♠ opening is a Penalty Double. You are not allowed to run, except when you have exceptional distribution. I had made the right call, our opponents cowardly let 4 Spades play at the other table.”
South: “This is a take-out Double, like all the Doubles of pre-emptive openings. With my cards, I really don’t expect to go down in 5 Hearts. You must pass 4♠, like Muriel in the other room.”
