THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

FOR THE SEMIFINAL AND FINAL STAGES OF THE REISINGER TROPHY AT THE FALL NABC IN LAS VEGAS, THE ACBL INTRODUCED AN INNOVATIVE WAY OF PRESENTING BRIDGE.

Using the League’s official YouTube Channel and powered by BBO, they covered two tables during the four sessions of play. Although you could not watch on the BBO website, the bidding and play records appeared in the archive in the usual way.

Using multiple cameras, spectators could see not only the action at the featured tables, but also the commentators. The presentation mirrored that used for major sporting events, and compared favourably with that employed in major chess events, including the current World Chess Championship match.

Rather than having designated commentators for the duration of the event, the format allowed for an ever-changing array as passing experts visited the transmission area.

At the start of the semifinals, Boye Brogeland and Simon de Wijs were holding the microphones, and when technical issues were encountered they were able to keep the audience entertained, not least by offering some excellent advice as to the best strategy to adopt in Board-a-Match events. Zia Mahmood was on hand to talk about all things bridge related and ACBL Executive Director Bronia Jenkins was a frequent visitor. She must have been delighted with the overall effect, with more than 11,000 people viewing the final days play.

One imagines that the ACBL will make continued use of this way of reporting major events, and it may attract the attention of the World Bridge Federation and the European Bridge League.
