There are numerous pieces of software that can be of considerable use to those who are involved in playing, teaching and writing about the game. What’s more, almost all of them are free!

Deep Finesse, William Bailey’s free interactive bridge hand analyzer, is an invaluable tool for those who want to explore the double-dummy possibilities on every deal, and is used by bridge clubs and organisations every day of the year.

Jeroen Warmerdam’s Suit Play is a freeware program that determines the optimal play of suit combinations in bridge for both matchpoints and IMP scoring.

On a similar vein there is a programme called automaton that will show you the exact odds of how the missing cards in a suit can be distributed.

Those who prefer to rely on a textbook should try to get hold of a copy of Bridge Odds for Practical Players by Hugh Kelsey & Michael Glauert or Roudinesco’s comprehensive Dictionary of Suit Combinations.
