Rubensohl and extensions.
North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?
This month we will be looking at:
Responses to a 1NT opening after an intervention. Rubensohl and extensions.
Problem 1

| W | N | E | S |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1NT | 2♠(*) | 3♦ | |
| Pass | 3NT |
The facts
Severe punishment. East has led a Club from Ace-fifth. Now deprived of a necessary late entry to dummy, North had to make do with five tricks, four down.
Arguments
North: “I did not hesitate bidding 3NT with a double stopper in each suit. I did understand your 3♦ bid as Heart transfer, but this kind of free bid at the three-level must guarantee a minimum of 7HCP.”
South: “I can pass if I’m sure that the bidding will get back to me and that I can bid 3♥ over 3♣ or 3♦. But if West passes 2♠, that will be the final contract and I will regret not having shown my suit immediately.”
