IN THIRD POSITION

THIS MONTH…

YOU ARE PLAYING TEAMS, SITTING NORTH IN THIRD POSITION AND HOLD THE FOLLOWING HAND:

♠ Q92
 AJ63
 K93
♣ AQ7

You are prepared to open 1NT when your partner is faster and opens himself 1NT!

What do you bid over 1NT?
You hold 16HCP and the flattest distribution possible, which means the hand is worth a quantitative 4NT (10 points). With slam ambitions, however, it is preferable to first find out if you have a fit in Hearts: if your partner has a Heart fit and a maximum, maybe he will be able to get a ruff in his hand that would be the twelfth trick. You therefore bid 2♣, Stayman (15 points), to which South responds 2.
