Opener’s rebid after an overcall by player number 4
North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?
This month we will be looking at:
Opener’s rebid after an overcall by player number 4.
Problem 1

| Pass | 1♠ | 2♦ | 2NT |
| Pass | 3NT |
The facts
The 4-2 Heart break condemned North-South to go down by three tricks in this non-existent 3 No-Trump contract. Who looked at their hand through rose-tinted glasses?
Arguments
North: “I thought that you had shown a hand in the range of 18-19HCP with a Diamond stopper. Nothing forces you to bid. You must pass and let me balance if I want.”
South: “I don’t agree at all. With 18-19HCP, I jump to 3NT. 2NT is a natural bid without a jump, therefore the equivalent of a 1NT bid after an overcall at the one-level, that is a free bid showing 14HCP and a good Diamond stopper.”
