Overcalls by player number 4

North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?

This month we will be looking at:
Overcalls by player number 4.

Problem 1

N/S Vul.

WNES
1♠Pass
1NT

The facts
1 No-Trump went down three or four, a small consolation, while at the other table North-South bid and made 3 No-Trump, West having passed 1♠. Is there a culprit or has West won the deal by answering 1NT with a very weak hand? This is what our two young friends seemed to think when this deal was played in a tournament reserved for youngsters under 21.

Arguments
North: “I found it too dangerous to double, caught in the crossfire with a balanced 13 count, especially in this situation of vulnerability. Kevin always bids whatever he wants, here he struck gold. I’m not at all amused.”
South: “Be a good sport, Sophie. We’ve been had, so all that’s left to do is to congratulate Kevin, who responded 1NT to 1♠ with only 2 points.”
