CORNUCOPIA OF DELIGHTS

ON 20 JULY 1957, THE THEN BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, HAROLD MACMILLAN, DELIVERED AN OPTIMISTIC SPEECH, TELLING HIS FELLOW CONSERVATIVES THAT ‘MOST OF OUR PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD’.

Almost 70 years later, we are witnessing a summer in which an extraordinary series of outstanding bridge events is taking place.

At the end of June, teams from Zones 4, 6 and 7 of the Asia Pacific Bridge Federation met in Goa, India, to contest the 5th Bonus Asia Cup Bridge Championship.
As that event concluded, the 57th European Championships (the qualifying contest for the 2027 World Team Championships) took place in Riga and were almost immediately followed by the European Youth Team Championships.
Following on from the European Championships, many of the players travelled to the United States of America. Not, as you might imagine, to support a team in the FIFA World Cup, but to compete in the ACBL’s Summer Nationals in Minneapolis.
When that event comes to an end, some of the players will travel to Sweden to compete in one of Europe’s biggest Festivals in Örebro. These tremendous tournaments have many things in common, but two of them are especially significant.
Thanks to the power of the Internet, spectators from around the world can follow the play from the comfort of their own homes. In addition, all these events produce Daily Bulletins which contain all the results as well as lengthy reports on each day’s play written by the world’s best bridge journalists.
These events provide the bridge public with a wealth of entertainment. For the players, unlike their counterparts in other sports, the rewards are usually less tangible.
Nevertheless, thanks to the continuous advance of technology, it is safe to say that ‘we have never had it so good!’
