POINTS OF ORDER
When they asked for help, a search on the Internet was inconclusive.
The first 11 volumes of England’s Bridge Magazine which commenced publication in May 1926, usually referred to the four players, as A, Y, B & Z, although from time to time the compass points N, S, E & W were used, sometimes both appearing in a single article.

by Mark Horton
Renowned Bridge aficionado Wolf Klewe noted that the July 1939 issue contained only N, S, E & W and the first 1949 issue after the war was the same. The Editor, Ewart Kempson, expressed his preference for knave over jack, but used a J in the diagrams.
He also discovered that some bridge writers were using N, S, E & W from 1926 onwards.
Published in November 1932, the first issue of The British Bridge World used N, S, E & W.
Consulting the ACBL’s Encyclopaedia of Bridge and their museum curator Tracy Yarbro has not yet been productive.
Whilst this research was taking place someone mentioned the mnemonic for remembering the compass points, Naughty Elephants Squirt Water.
For the time being, the origins of the adaptation of the compass points must remain a mystery, but the search continues.
