THE RACE TO HERNING
The Championships feature the Bermuda Bowl (Open teams), the Venice Cup (Women’s teams), the d’Orsi Trophy (Senior teams) and the Wuhan Cup (Mixed Teams). Winning one of these events is the ultimate achievement, equivalent to winning an Olympic gold medal.
In recent weeks several Zones have been staging their qualifying competitions. In Zone 4 BFAME (the Bridge Federation of Asia and the Middle East), India won the Open, Seniors and Women’s events while UAE took the Mixed. India also secured the remaining qualifying spot in the Mixed, with Pakistan qualifying in the Women’s and Bangladesh in the Open and Seniors.

In the ongoing Zone 8 championships (the African Bridge Federation), Egypt and Morocco qualified for the Seniors, while South Africa and Reunion secured places in the Mixed Teams. South Africa is expected to qualify in both the Open and Women’s events, but several teams are battling for the second spot and a trip to Herning.
Meanwhile in Zone 2 (North American Bridge Federation) at the month-long United States Bridge Federation Championships in Schaumburg, Illinois there was a major surprise when the spot as USA 1 in the Bermuda Bowl was secured by the four handed Eddie Wold, Finn Kolesnik, Adam Kaplan and Adam Grossack. There is already speculation surrounding the addition of a third pair.
In Zone 7 (the South Pacific Bridge Federation), the Australian Bridge Federation has already posted details of the players who will represent them in Herning at www.abf.com.au/australian-representative-teams/
