GENERATIONS OLD AND NEW
Having hosted the European Team Championships in 2024, the Danish town of Herning was back in the limelight almost immediately, stepping in at short notice to stage the 75th anniversary edition of the World Bridge Teams Championship.
It proved to be a memorable event, due in no small part to the local community. Restaurants that would normally have been closed remained open and the Herning Bridge Club provided 150 volunteers to assist the World Bridge Federation.

by Mark Horton
The Bermuda Bowl went to the USA for the first time since 2017, Adam Kaplan, Adam Grossack and Finn Kolesnik winning their first ‘adult’ medals while Eddie Wold collected another world medal, his first coming in 1978!
Netherlands captured the Venice Cup, Wietske van Zwol and Martine Verbeek adding a second to the one they won 25 years ago in Bermuda.
The D’Orsi Trophy returned to the USA (as in the Bermuda Bowl, they last won in Lyon in 2017), giving Jeff Meckstroth his 17th world medal. It also saw Larry Cohen secure his first world title (and the opportunity to write a sequel to his famous article, Losing in Lille).
Italy secured the Wuhan Cup, China having to be content with silver for the second year in a row.
In these Championships, youth was very much to the fore. Might any of this new generation go on to surpass the record of Bob Hamman, who has so far won medals between 1964 and 2023, a remarkable 59-year span.
