Developments after a strong opening
North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?
This month, we will be looking at:
Developments after a strong opening.
The subject is difficult, so we have three problems with three stars.
Problem 1

| W | N | E | S |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2♣ | Pass | 2♦ | |
| Pass | 2♠ | Pass | 2NT |
| Pass | 3♠ | Pass | 4♠ |
The facts
Our young champions never found their nine-card fit in Diamonds and, as a result, missed out on this excellent 6 Diamonds, if not the grand slam. Who is guilty?
Arguments
North: “I’ve given priority to bidding my sixth Spade, especially since if I say 3♦ over 2NT I promise a hand in the range of 21-23HCP. In hindsight, I was probably wrong.”
South: “Your hand is worth the equivalent of 21HCP because of the 6-4 distribution and the ideal quality of the honors, which make it possible to evaluate it at four losers. You can say 3♦ without the risk of losing a possible 6-2 Spade fit. I would bid 3♠ over 3♦ with two cards and if I say 3NT, you can always correct to 4♠.”L
