Jump bids in competitive auctions

North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?

This month we will be looking at:
Jump bids in competitive auctions.

Easy
Average
Difficult
Problem 1
WNES
1♣1
12♠4

The facts
This young couple missed the opportunity to defend in 5 Diamonds for one down, when 4 Hearts is laydown. Non- vulnerable versus vulnerable, this error is expensive.

Arguments
North: “Facing an overcall, a jump isnever pre-emptive, I am sure that we have already talked about it. My jump to 2♠ shows exactly five Spades and four-card support in Diamonds. I have no reason to bid on to 5 when I have two immediate defensive tricks.”
South: “I took your bid of 2♠ as a banal weak bid on the two-level with Spades and around 8HCP, so not really a pre-empt in my opinion. I don’t know about these fit jumps you told me about afterwards but, in any case, I don’t see why you don’t defend at 5.”
