Stayman or not Stayman

In duplicate, you almost systematically use Stayman in response to a 1NT opening as soon as you hold 8 or more HCP and at least one four-card major.

However, in matchpoint pairs you sometimes take the risk of leaping directly to the No-Trump game despite looking at a four-card major. In what circumstances does your hand qualify for such a waiver?

  • Your hand is very flat (4-3-3-3 distribution, with no possibility of ruffing).
  • You have a 4-4-3-2, at least 13 HCP and a well-guarded doubleton (Ax or Kx).
