HOME SWEET HOME

WITH THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES SET TO TAKE PLACE IN PARIS ON 26 JULY

it is appropriate to reflect that many sporting contests have become inextricably linked to a single venue, to the extent that they have become synonymous, the mention of one automatically connecting it to the other. Mention Augusta and you get The Masters. Refer to Wembley and you have the FA Cup Final. For the French Open Tennis read Roland Garros. The list is endless.

However, many sporting contests feature venues that are constantly changing, and bridge is no exception. Although it is not unusual for an event to return to a venue from time to time, none of the major bridge championships has a permanent home. Take for example the World Bridge Team Championships. The previous six locations have been Nusa Dua, Bali, Chennai, India, Lyon, France, Wuhan, China, Salsomaggiore, Italy and Marrakech, Morocco.

Following tradition, the 2025 edition, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the inception of the competition would have been staged in Bermuda, but the event has outgrown the conference facilities available on the island. Negotiations with Macau have been taking place, but it is by no means certain that they will come to fruition.

If an agreement with Macau cannot be reached, it has been suggested that Herning, host for the recently competed European Team Championships, might step into the breach. The venue was popular with the players, but although the Conference centre could easily accommodate the main events, it is unclear that it could cope with a sizeable entry in the Transnational event that runs along side the Championships.

Would it be such a bad thing if the Championships could find a permanent home?
