Overcalling with two-suiters
North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?
This month we will be looking at:
overcalling with two-suiters.
Problem 1
W | N | E | S |
---|---|---|---|
1♦ | 1♠ | 3♦ |
The facts
East-West easily made 3 Diamonds, while our friends could just as easily make 4 Hearts. Who is guilty?
Arguments
North: “For me, it is out of the question to show my two-suiter by way of bidding 2♦. Even non vulnerable, you know very well that one needs a maximum of six losers, and I’ve got seven. What’s more, the quality of my suits is very poor. I would have forced myself with KJ1095 and AJ1032.”
South: “And I don’t reproach you, except that maybe you could have balanced with 3♥. But I think I am a little bit guilty myself, I could have doubled for take-out, but I was deterred by my singleton Spade.”
