THE RACE FOR SETTING UP TRICKS AT NO-TRUMP [PART 1]

Making 3 No-Trump is nothing more than taking nine tricks before the defense can cash five of their own. This obvious fact conceals a truth that is quickly forgotten. Identifying the potential for creating tricks is not enough to devise a proper game plan… declarer must also ensure that the defense cannot defeat the contract before the plan comes to fruition.

In this context, the opening lead can trigger a race between declarer and defense. Therefore, anticipate how this race is likely to unfold and choose your line of play with careful consideration of the time factor and the number of tricks the opponents are likely to take.
