THE RACE FOR SETTING UP TRICKS AT NO-TRUMP [PART 2]
When you play your contract, you count your sure tricks and the number of tricks you are missing. But you must not overlook – especially when you are racing the defenders for who sets their tricks up first – to count the defenders’ tricks as well so that you know how many you might have to concede.
Let’s illustrate with this classic example:

| W | N | E | S |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1♠ | 1NT |
Lead: ♠J. East wins with the Ace and returns the Queen, which you win with the King (West following with the 3).

Great examples. Focus on that suit for the trick you need to make your contract. Count the opponents tricks. Then attack the suit which will allow you to get your trick before the opponents get theirs. It is a race. Select a suit to get your required trick to make your contract before the opponents get theirs to set your contract!
