THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW
To ensure that there would be a level playing field, Franco Baseggio and Brian Platnick developed a computer-based detection system that would automatically detect actions based on unauthorized information. They christened their program EDGAR (Everyone Deserves a Game Above Reproach) and it is now used by the ACBL in all its online games, every ACBL member who plays online being screened.

by Mark Horton
As well as examining all current games, the ACBL is systematically checking every event from 2020 onwards.
By analysing bidding, opening leads and card play, EDGAR detects situations in which it considers that a player’s actions came about because of having unauthorized information. It employs a ‘hit’ or ‘miss’ system, mostly considering day to day decisions which honest players will get wrong some of the time. Having a low ‘miss’ rate results in a player being flagged as ‘red’.
However, being flagged only happens following the examination of a significant number of deals. Then a human analysis takes place to make sure if the results are consistent with cheating.
Any player deemed to be acting unfairly is contacted by the ACBL, detailing the evidence and the resulting charges.
Perhaps at some point EDGAR might be used to examine historical matches played in World Championships and other major events where the play was recorded online.
