ATYPICAL OPENING, YES BUT…

When playing matchpoint pairs, in uncontested auctions you must more often than not give preference to the bid that immediately describes your hand rather than choose the one that would require further development. Concise bidding won’t make your opponents’ task any easier, neither for the opening lead nor for the defensive play. This quest for sobriety can be applied right from the start of the auction, with the choice of your opening bid. In the French standard system, the openings that immediately describe the structure of the hand as well as the strength (point range) are:
