ON TREND

THE RECENTLY CONCLUDED EUROPEAN TRANSNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN POZNAŃ WERE A HUGE SUCCESS, SETTING NEW RECORDS FOR ATTENDANCE.

One hundred and twenty-three squads entered the Open Teams and ninety-three contested the Mixed Teams, highlighting the growing popularity of this type of contest. Those events contrasted sharply with the entry levels in the Women’s Teams (21) and Senior Teams (19).

Where the level of entries is low, it presents the organisers with a conundrum. They need to transmit play to the online audience, but they know that they will be expecting to see the stars in action (when Zia was on BBO, guess which table attracted the viewers) and there are a limited number of tables (there were four BBO tables in Poznań). This inevitably meant there was very limited coverage of the Senior Teams and none for the Women’s event.

This creates a problem for the journalists covering the championships as they primarily work from home and rely on the internet coverage for their material.

Gone are the days when they would sit at the table and write up their reports afterwards. Nowadays they are typing contemporaneously with the bidding and play, sometimes delivering their copy moments after play has ended.

That is not the only problem the journalist face. In the World and European Team Championships, the contestants are required to register their system cards so that they are available online. That is not the case for Transnational Events, and in many situations the reporter has little or no idea of the bidding system that is being employed.

Whilst it might be possible to address the issue of the registration of system cards, finding a solution to the falling numbers in face-to-face Senior and Women’s events is much more complex.
