COMBINING YOUR CHANCES [PART 1]
A good declarer often does not put all his hopes of making a contract on a simple finesse or another single manoeuvre. When he cannot afford losing the lead, he starts by testing the maximum of “free” chances, the ones that do not carry the risk of losing a trick to the defense, before falling back on a more definitive option when everything else has already failed. This strategy is called combining your chances.
