Responses to 2-level overcalls
North-South have reached a very poor contract. As so often, each of the two players considers that his partner is responsible for the accident. And you, what do you think?

The facts
North could not make 4 Hearts after a Spade lead and a Diamond switch, while the other pairs scored nine or ten tricks when they played 3 No-Trump by South. Who is to blame?
Arguments
North: “I never promised six Hearts and even if I had, with your double Spade stopper you must suggest we play in No-Trumps. I meet the criteria for bidding 2♥ with five cards, three honors, and an opening bid.”
South: “Vulnerable, the overcall of 2♥ promises a six-card suit and the strength for a good opening. It is valid to force to game with 12HCP, including the doubleton King in your suit. Jumping to 3NT with three small Diamonds can lead to a ridiculous result. You are allowed – and it is even recommended – to double with five Hearts, which would have allowed us to quickly reach 3 No-Trump.”
